# Testnet and test keys

> What a test network is, how CryptoLike test keys (ck_test_) work with test networks, and how to pay a test payment with test coins before going live.

A separate copy of a blockchain whose coins have no value, used to try transfers and integrations without spending real money.

## How it works in CryptoLike

CryptoLike has test keys and test networks. A key with the `ck_test_` prefix signs requests exactly like a live key and works with test networks; where the API runs on the main networks, a test key is refused with `401 auth.test_key`. The whole flow is the same as in production: create a payment, open the payment page, pay it, receive the signed webhooks.

Test coins have no value; CryptoLike support can send you some. Send the exact amount shown on the payment page, on the network named there; confirmations are counted the same way as in production. `GET /v1/currencies` called with a test key lists the assets you can test.

Keep test and live keys in separate configurations. In plugins, test mode needs a `ck_test_` key and the test API URL in the plugin's API URL setting (ask CryptoLike support for it). Plugins check the key prefix against their mode — a live key is refused in test mode, a test key in live mode — and show a "Test mode" badge at the checkout so nobody takes test payments for real ones. Before going live, follow the checklist in the [developer guide](https://cryptolike.net/docs) and the step-by-step guide to [testing crypto payments](https://cryptolike.net/guides/test-crypto-payments).
